Is there a way to post a URL in the files module? I want to direct folks to larger files for download and external sites.
Thanks |

| In Corporate/Enterprise you can specify any external link when adding a file, in Standard however you need to just post the URL to the task/project description or task comment. |

I'll have to revisit the spec, I think I was getting confused for something we added for a client under customization.
For now you need to add it to comment/description. |

It would be great if that was an addition. Clients tend to only want to look in one area for review files. If links are involved, sending them outside of the files tab gets confusing.
I'd love to hear when that gets added. |

File are always attached to certain tasks or projects, so it should still be relatively obvious for the client. We recommend that you use the Copper file system so that there is an audit trail and things are tracked. We can't track an external link (for check in/out).
For example if you uploaded a concept graphic it would appear in the task details, or if you were just posting a link to an external file it would also appear in thet task details. If the client is allocated to that task they get an email notification in either case.
I do understand that everyone is different, but why are you looking to provide an external link out of interest? |

Sometimes we are uploaded large review files (100MB or more) and it is simpler to upload them to the server via ftp. At least there we can tell how long the upload will take.
I'm new to copper but in other php based systems, uploading with php is touchy and you never know how long the process is taking.
Also, some uploads occur automatically so it makes sense to post a link for the client EOD while a file uploads overnight so that they have the content first thing in the morning. |

Gotcha, yes we've done the same thing in the past, and have just added a comment to the task "hey, we've uploaded the file here ftp://www.blah.com" so client gets an email notification and can log in and get the file.
If we added an ftp upload field to files, it would only be almost the same thing (but we'll look at it nonetheless.) |

Cool. Thanks.
I'm just getting orientated with copper. I think steering clients to the tasks, instead of the big bucket of project files, will work fine for now. |
