I was expecting that the point of having user groups was so that you only had to set permissions to modules, projects and clients pr. group and then any member of a group would inherit the rights. This is not the case.

The users I add to a group get individual permissions. And when adding a new project each user must be asssigned permissions to that project. When adding a number of projects that you need most of your staff to work on, it is a lot of clicking for something that could be automated by just setting permissions to your Staff group.

It also seems that the admin user (me) can't be part of any group. I don't want to "waste" a user license since we don't have someone who's only job is admin of Copper. This seems like a bug.

What is in fact the point of user groups?

Usually groups override individual, unless you have it set the other way in config.php:

define('PERM_ORDER', '0'); //0 = Groups before users

I'm currently using the 14-day trial version, where easy administration / project management is one of my key critecria for going to the next step and hosting. So I can't check or edit the config.php file yet.

If would in fact make more sense if group setting was default and then you could set individual exceptions.

Not necessarily, most customers want to see permissions for a group and have the individuals adopt those permissions (e.g. Sales). We give customers the choice, but for the trial it is set that way.
